Pomodoro Technique
What: The Pomodoro Technique is a time management system that uses a simple timer to maximize efficient working while providing needed breaks of appropriate duration. This technique eliminates marathon working sessions that end in burnout as well as procrastination and distractions that result in unproductive time.
Who: This strategy may help learners who are high in Number Smart and learners who find focusing on a task challenging. Both teachers and learners (and all individuals in and out of school) may benefit from the Pomodoro Technique as it is a method that can increase productivity on any task.
Where/When: The Pomodoro Technique can be used whenever specific focus on a task or tasks is necessary over a sustained period of time. Students may find the technique particularly beneficial when working on a larger project or essay or when completing homework across a series of subjects.
How: The Pomodoro Technique involves the use of four 25-minute focus sessions, called “pomodoros,” separated by five-minute breaks, with a longer 15-30-minute break after four pomodoros. This method requires the use of a kitchen timer (or other visual timer) for both the pomodoros and the breaks.
